“Storm in die Wes-Kaap” is Lionel Maharajah’s (aka Lion Raj) first Afrikaans single. His previous singles (released under his solo project and his band The Inside Job) were all English. According to Lionel, fans have been urging him to release an Afrikaans song for a long time, but he wasn’t ready for it until recently, when his daughter was born. He started focusing more on Afrikaans grammar and speaking the language around the house.
The song is named after a severe storm they experienced during a summer in the Western Cape, which was unusual for this region. This inspired Lionel to write a song about unplanned things that often happen to us and go against our expectations.
